Inform our representatives in Brussels that the current legislative proposal for far-reaching deregulation of new genetic engineering in plants is scientifically untenable and jeopardises the future of our livelihoods. You will find good arguments in our brochure

Why plants obtained from new genetic engineering should not be deregulated

and in our new report

“A crack in creation? Release of NGT organisms may disrupt the ecosystems”

We demand that the EU must not turn a blind eye to the negative consequences of deregulating new genetic engineering.

In order to remind decision-makers once again of the far-reaching implications of this decision before the final vote in the European Parliament, we are proposing a participatory activity:

Our suggested text is:

Dear Member of Parliament Mr./Mrs. _______,

The joint development of species (co-evolution) has taken millions of years. It takes only a short period of time to destroy ecosystems. We should take it as a warning that Jennifer Doudna, one of the inventors of the CRISPR/Cas gene editing tool, has titled her book ‘A Crack in Creation’.
Even the companies that are applying for patents on plants created using new genetic engineering techniques (NGT) because they see opportunities for profit describe NGTs as a ‘disruptive technology’.
This highlights the real problem: the disruptions caused by NGTs can endanger our livelihoods and native biodiversity. This is why mandatory risk assessment and traceability are needed. The EU must not simply hand over its responsibility for protecting people and the environment to industry.

To protect future generations, please reject the radical proposal to deregulate NGT plants! Further information and scientifically described risks of NGT plants can be found in a new report:

Yours sincerely,
