MON863 x NK603 maize
On 2 March 2010, the EU Commission authorised MON863 x NK603 maize for import and processing in the EU. Food and feed products containing, consisting of, or produced from maize MON863 x NK603 can now be legally brought to market till 2020.
On 11 June 2009, EFSA published an opinion on the use of antibiotic resistance marker genes in GM plants, including an assessment of the use of the nptII gene, which is harboured in MON863 maize.
On 14 May 2008, the European Commission gave a mandate to EFSA for an opinion on use of antibiotic resistance marker genes, such as nptII which is harboured in MON863 maize.
On 18 February 2008, the Council discussed the draft Commission Decision authorising the placing on the market of maize MON863 x NK603. The Council noted the absence of the qualified majority necessary to reach a decision in favour of or against the Commission proposal.
On 10 October 2007, the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCFAH) discussed a draft Commission Decision authorising the placing on the market of maize MON863 x NK603. The Committee delivered no opinion.
On 6 July 2005, the EFSA GMO Panel gave a favourable opinion and concluded that it is unlikely that the placing on the market of MON863 x NK603 maize for food and feed uses will have any adverse effects on human or animal health or the environment in the context of their intended uses.
